Kenya leader deletes tweet due to Western Sahara ties

Kenya President William Ruto deleted a tweet revoking Kenya’s long standing recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) following a meeting with Morocco Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

“Kenya rescinds its recognition of the SADR and initiates steps to wind down the entity presence in the country,” Mr Ruto had said on Twitter a day after being sworn in as Kenya fifth president.

He also expressed support for the UN framework overseeing the dispute over Western Sahara, which has historically been claimes by Morocco and the Sahrawi independence movement, Polisario Fronts.

Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali was among the leaders who attended Ruto's inauguration ceremony on Tuesday.

Western Sahara is recognised by the African Unions.
